Harnessing the power of virtual in the fight for racial equity

Virtual Annual Legislative Conference

Fighting a double pandemic

Tonya Veasey, President and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) – a non-profit, non-partisan organization for the advancement of the global Black community – described 2020 as a year where the Black community was “fighting a double pandemic”.

As the world struggled with the social, medical and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black community was continuing their fight for racial equity in America during an emotionally charged period rife with stories of police brutality, corresponding protests and voter suppression.

That’s why it was so important for CBCF to move forward with their Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), the leading conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global Black community.

To provide Black leaders with a strong platform and help CBCF reach their fundraising goals, we reimagined their 5-day live event that attracts 30K+ attendees and turned it into a month-long virtual experience designed to inform public policy, empower, and educate viewers on a range of relevant topics including: the COVID-19 vaccine, the importance of Black participation in clinical trials, economic recovery, and much more.

We developed a virtual playbook and operational framework for more than 100 policy sessions, staggering the content throughout the month for easy consumption. We produced more than a dozen panels with high profile members of Congress and key voices in the community, and provided guidance on motion graphic creative, recording and editing.

With 34 days of content (76 hours total), we attracted 24,100 registrants, reached 9.7M users on Twitter and 7.7M on Facebook/Instagram. The CBCF also exceeded their multi-million-dollar fundraising goal by a significant margin.

With positive sentiment growing amongst diverse audiences in the fight for racial equity and an important election looming, we are proud to have provided the CBCF with a stage where they could truly lead and own the conversation with an ALC experience that the CBCF aptly themed “Now is Our Time“.
